Babysitter Checklist
Whether you are a seasoned sitter or just a beginner, here is a comprehensive checklist of information that you should know to provide the best care possible.
Make sure that you know
- At least one parent’s cell number
- A phone number of where they can be contacted if they cannot be reached by cell
- A neighbour’s name and phone number
In the event of an emergency, make sure you know the following:
- The phone numbers for fire, police and medical services
- The Poison Control phone number
- The address of where you are babysitting and the nearest intersection written down (this info is useful to give 911 operators or other emergency services)
- The name of the child(ren)’s doctor (again, this is useful information for emergency medical services)
Ensure that you know the following important information about the child or children:
- Names - Straighten out who’s who so mix ups don’t arise
- Age(s)
- Allergies
- Any medical conditions that you should be aware of (if it won’t affect your role as a babysitter, then you don’t need to know).
Any medications you have to remind the child to take or any that you have to help administer
- Know how and when to administer, as well as the correct dosage
Be familiar with the the child or children’s routine(s) i.e. what is
- Their mealtime routine?
- Their bedtime and routine before going to sleep?
- The foods that they are and are NOT allowed to eat?
- Their favourite toys?
Ask a parent to inform you of the basic house rules.
- What can they watch/do on TV or the computer, and what can’t they watch/do?
- Do they have a time limit to how long they can watch TV, be on the computer, play video games, etc.?
- Are they are allowed to have visitors over while they are gone?
- Can they play outside? And if so, what are the boundaries?
Know where the following items are located:
- First aid supplies
- Fire extinguisher
- All exits/emergency exits
- Dangerous cleaners or pills
- Forbidden or hazardous areas
And lastly, know when the parents are expected to be back home. After completing the checklist, you can feel secure in knowing that you have all the necessary information to keep your charges safe and properly cared for.
