My name is Leah Smith, and I am currently pursuing my MFA in costume design and technology for theatre. I began sewing at age 7, and have sewn costumes for theatrical productions for the past four years, as well as taught sewing to beginners of all ages. I am offering summer sewing lessons for children and teens. I provide use of my personal sewing machine and patterns for each lesson (unless choosing a garment of choice). Please provide fabric, an iron, ironing board, and table space for lessons. I can provide fabric for an additional cost. To schedule a lesson, contact me at [email protected] or call/text (616) 45.... Intro (ages 6 and under) One 2-hour lesson: $30 Learn the very basics of how sewing works. Complete a hand-sewn felt stuffed animal. This class is only hand sewing with a dull needle and does not use a sewing machine. All supplies included. Beginner (ages 7 and up) Two 3-hour lessons: $90 Learn how to work a sewing machine and all of its basic functions. Complete a tote bag that incorporates a variety of sewing skills, including: • cutting out pieces from a pattern • sewing lining, pockets and strap using proper seam allowances Supplies needed: 1 ¾ yards of fabric (cotton preferably), 1 yard of a lining fabric (cotton), 1 ½ yards sew-in interfacing (optional, makes bag sturdier), thread to match fabric One 3-hour lesson: $45 Learn how to work a sewing machine and all of its basic functions. Complete a skirt that incorporates a variety of sewing skills: • cutting out pieces from a pattern • sewing a complete skirt using proper seam allowances, hemming, and adding elastic Supplies needed: 1 ½ yards fabric (Cotton preferably), 1 yard elastic, thread that matches fabric Intermediate (ages 12 and up, or after beginner class is completed) Four 3-hour lessons: $200 Learn advanced sewing skills and techniques. Complete a dress. Techniques covered: • Installing a zipper and inserting sleeves • Hand sewing • Pleating, gathering, sewing a dart, hemming • Reading a pattern and sewing a complete garment using proper seam allowances Supplies needed: 2 ¼ yards of fabric (cotton preferably), thread that matches fabric Weekly Lessons (ages 7 and up) Twice a week for 2 hours OR once a week for 4 hours: $75 per week--Learn how to work a sewing machine and all of its functions. Complete a new project every week. Supplies to be determined
