by Craig Sutton

The United States has a rich history when it comes to daytime television.

The country has created some of the most successful and long-running shows in the history of modern entertainment. Here’s are a look at some of the best daytime television shows and the personalities that drive them!

1. Family Feud

Family Feud is a popular game show that matches two families against each other, each family competes by answering survey questions. The show premiered in 1976 and has had a number of iconic hosts including Richard Dawson and Ray Combs but the current host, Steve Harvey, may be the best ever. The ratings have dramatically improved since he took over and his hilarious clips are widely popular on YouTube.

2. The Maury Show

Most Americans know Maury Povich by way of his daily talk show that focuses on relationship issues, scandal, and sexuality by using lie detector and DNA tests to expose cheaters and “baby daddy’s”. Before he was involved in daytime entertainment, Maury had a credible career in journalism. His career began in 1967 and continued until 1986 when he hosted the well-known show “A Current Affair”, which mixed celebrity gossip and human interest stories.

3. The Ellen DeGeneres Show

The eponymously titled Emmy award-winning show, which made its debut in 2003, features interviews with celebrities, internet pop stars and heart-warming human interest stories (like the video above). Before she had her own show, Ellen rose to prominence as a comedian in the 80s and 90s. She gained further notoriety in 1997 when she became the first lead on a sitcom to acknowledge her homosexuality. Since the inception of her show, she has been a prominent spokesman for LGBT issue and animal rights.

4. Judge Judy

Judge Jude is a court based reality show, which features the Judith Sheindlin who presides over cases in a simulated courtroom. She has a reputation for her no-nonsense attitude and demeanor. The show made its appearance in 1996. In 2012, Sheindlin was reported as the highest paid television personality. She has been an attorney since 1965.

5. The Today Show

An American original. The Today Show made its debut in 1952, broadcasting on NBC in New York City. it is the originator of the daytime talks genre and the fifth longest-running show in the history of television. The show includes news, interviews with celebrities and discussions of pop culture. Many of the shows anchors have become celebrities, including notable weatherman Al Roker.

6. The Price is Right

One of America’s most popular game shows, The Price is Right made its debut in 1972. As the name suggest, most of the contests and quizzes involve the knowledge of certain prices. The show was hosted by Bob Barker from 1972 until 2007, and co-hosted by Vanna White. Barker, was replaced by actor and comedian Drew Carey.
