Nannies and babysitters aren't people hired to sit on your couch while your child watches television. These people are caregivers, people who have a strong influence on your children. Therefore, as a caregiver to infants and adolescences, I don't just focus on engaging activities that run out their physical energy, so that they sleep sound through the night; I also make them exert mental energy by incorporating fundamental knowledge into our activities. For a toddler we would sing the Alphabet as our theme song, for a preschooler I would work on abilities such as tying his/her shoes, or tutored a fifth grader in history by reenacting Lewis and Clark's voyage. My job is to never take away from a parents connection with their children, but to add a connection as an authoritative figure and a family friend. Never allowing the title as an authority to enable me to react negatively to poor behavior, but only use positive reinforcement. I may only be 20 years old but with over 8 years of experience in babysitting and one year of paid experience in various fields, an interview is the only reasonable way to conclude how responsible any person really is.
