Sitter in Takoma Park, Maryland

My name is Amber Haning, I'm 23 years old and just graduated with an art degree from Frostburg State University. I grew up in Germantown and just moved back to work as a full-time art conservator in DC. Through middle and high school I babysat various children from the church I attended and I watched my next-door neighbors twice-a-week for a number of years. The majority of the baby-sitting experience I have was through my next-door neighbors. When I was in 8th grade, my neighbor came over with her 6-week old boy and asked my mother if I would like to babysit two nights a week while she worked part time. I happily agreed and over the years they have had two more children of their own and adopted a niece. Even after I left for college I stayed very close with them and babysat while I was home (even if their parents were home and just needed a little break). Today that 6-week old boy is 11 and attending the same middle school I went to when I began babysitting him. I make regular trips to visit them. I do not believe that watching television or playing video games is a good way for children to spend a lot of time. I like to get kids active, especially if it involves using creativity and imagination. I ran a museum in college for 2.5 years and always wanted to start a children's program, but could never find quite enough funding. I've been trying to think of ways I could make a little extra money without wearing myself too thin, and I think weekend babysitting might be the perfect way to do it. I love kids and have a lot of fun getting them thinking and excited about the world around them (I think someday I'd really like to get in to teaching). The internet seems like a weird way to advertise for this sort of thing, but I'm not sure where else to turn. I'm trustworthy and understanding of any concerns a parent may have with inviting a stranger into their home to watch their children.
