I'm an
Individual
My full name is Ronald Lyle Vanbuskirk RN. I spent 9 years in the Army with the 3rd Ranger Bn- 1St Special Forces. This was my inspiration into nursing. I received my RN License in 1999. I worked 2 years in med surg and the rest in OR. I've worked my way up into being the Director of Nursing at 2 facilities. I'm called the Big Teddy Bear my my staff and patients. I was taught Honor Respect and Humility in the service. My favorite part of Nursing is getting to know my patients. I'm routinely stopped in public by family member and patients thanking me for the respect and kindness I had showed to these families. I ALWAYS makes me feel good to hear this. I'm a people person who seeks to go out of my way to please. I wore my Army Jump wings on my name badge. I had a 16 year old pregnant with a fractured tub fib and a VERY worried dad. I sat and talked with them for around 30 minutes prior to surgery. The 16 year old opened up to me about a HX of substance abuse. I told him we don't judge anyone and if you would like I could try to help. They both burst into tears. I talked with anesthesia regarding his HX, they kept him pain free during and after surger. While recuperating on the 2nd floor I went and talked with them both. I asked the young man if he still wanted help with his substance problems he said yes. Again his father broke down in tears. I spoke with a friend who does pain management with the goal of tapering off then getting help through sober living. I then gave him my jump wings for encouragement along with my phone number 5 months later I was invited to his completion of sober living. He still goes to counseling and helps others. This was 4 years ago. He really wanted to enlist in the Army but with his substance abuse problems earlier in his life he was not eligible for enlistment. I came to his 3 years sobriety celebration and gave him my RANGER TAB AND COMBAT INFANTRY BADGE. I told him he had fought a braver battle that I ever could. Again he and his father wept. I see him time to time with his hat covered in the Army badges I gave him. This is how I treat people and I look forward to this opportunity. Sincerely Ronald Lye Vanbuskirk RN.
