I am a 19 year old woman with a passion for taking care and nurturing children to grow. I was a straight A student throughout high school and was in the top third of my class. I took part in multiple clubs: orchestra, chamber, student council, book club, math masters, chess club, the honors society, volleyball, and flag team. I just received my AA degree from Riverland community college in southern Minnesota as well as got admitted to the Phi Theta Kappa honors society. I will be continuing my education in child psychology and social work in Tulsa OK this spring. I have lot's of experience with taking care of children. I grew up in daycare situations where I learned that routine and fun can go hand-in-hand in making each child's day a great time. I have a little sister who I have been taking care of since she was one day old, two cousins I have been helping take care of since I was ten, and I have volunteered at many daycares as a helper. I took child development, and working with young children in high school where I helped feed, dress, change, and play with seven different babies at once all ranging from 9-12 months old. In my senior year of high school I took a mentorship class where I got to teach two preschool classrooms for six months. This involved being able to work with all different types of children, including special needs, where you teach them to play, share, read, exercise, and learn to be helping hands. I started working when I was 16 in the Men and Children's department of Herberger's where you have to work closely with all different kinds of families in finding the deals and clothes that are right for their children. This last year I have been working for Embrace Homecare where I have been a PCA to a six year old with down syndrome, a three year old who has autism, a six year old with severe brain damage, and a young teen with anxiety. This has been an amazing year of teaching the six year old how to walk, teaching the three year old how to start reading, watching the other six year old laugh and smile as you read Green eggs and Ham by Dr.Seuss, and watching the teen work through her anxiety and overcoming it by finding healthy coping mechanisms. Being a PCA has taught me how to work with all types of different mental disorders and working to not only work with the families but forming bonds with them that with last a lifetime. I have also learned how to change feeding tubes, changing diapers quickly and efficiently just in case someone has really good aim, taking blood pressures and pulses, teaching kids how to walk and read and speak, and giving proper medications and ointments along with training in First Aid. All of these wonderful experiences in my life have shown me that kindness, honesty, determination, integrity, comedy, and a big heart can get you far in life. Everyday I wake up and think of this one quote from the movie "The Help" directed by Tate Taylor; "You is kind. You is smart. You is important" and it's that message that I want to pass along to every child that I work with.
