MISSION The mission of Camp Success Summer Academy is to create an academically stimulating summer learning environment that fosters remediation, enrichment, and critical thinking skills in the areas of literacy and mathematics. We seek to provide development-appropriate instruction that will promote individual differences and learning styles through exploration, direct teaching, field trip experiences, and socialization. ABOUT THE PROGRAM Leshia Reed, founder and visionary of Camp Success Summer Academy is currently a special education teacher in the Broad Prize Winning Gwinnett County Public Schools District. Her desire to help children maximize their potential despite ethnicity, culture, or socioeconomic status is the driving force behind the program. One of her favorite quotes by the late Margret Mede states that, Children must be taught how to think, not what to think. Therefore, one of Ms. Reeds primary objectives for the summer academic program is to foster critical thinking skills in every student. She believes that if every student can think critically, then they will be able to excel in most aspects of life. Critical thinking skills are taught and learned in the classroom throughout the school year, but what typically happens during summer break? Children often forget those skills and other necessary literacy and math skills to start off the year strong, so teachers often begin the school year re-teaching. What a waste of time! If children attend Camp Success Summer Academy, students will have the opportunity to maintain skills that have already been taught and will be equipped with the necessary skills for new learning at the start of the year. Suzette Daniel, co-director is currently an elementary school counselor who formally owned and operated 4 Our Kids Educational Services through the Georgia SES program. She has also conducted numerous summer camps under her company and at Summerour Middle School in Gwinnett County Public Schools. Previously she served as a counselor and an assistant principal in the Dekalb County School system. Her philosophy is that every child has the ability to reach their fullest potential given the proper resources and motivational guidance. The academic component of Camp Success Summer Academy consists of one hour of literacy instruction and one hour of math instruction daily with a certified teacher or teacher in training. Instruction will primarily focus on mastery of the most heavily weighted state standards according to the Georgia Milestones Assessment System. Children will have an opportunity to take part in remediation and enrichment activities. Instruction will be tailored to students individual needs, so parents will be asked to provide a copy of their childs report card from the previous year showing all four quarters, their end of the year reading level, and students will be required to take a placement test. This information will help our academic team with planning and grouping.
